UNIT SEVENTEEN:
Lexicalized Signs Unit
For this unit we are going to be breaking away from the curriculum and focusing on something that is crucial to ASL.
This unit will focus on what I've always known as "Fingerspelled Loan Signs," but seems to have been renamed recently to be called "Lexicalized Fingerspelling." However, I continue to refer to them as FLS. These are signs that came from the fingerspelling of the English word, but have morphed over time to include specific movements and/or orientations, as well as the deletion of certain letters, to become a separate SIGN altogether. Some are merely signs that represent something as the only sign (without signing it in descriptive ASL), while others are designed to show emphatic meaning. These signs are always written down with a "#" preceding to show that it is a FLS and not any other sign for that concept (e.g. #CAR). There are MANY, but I chose to focus on the 25 that I see most often in use among Deaf people and interpreters in the state of Arkansas.
Also, so we don't fall behind in our curriculum, I will be posting a UNIT SEVENTEEN "B" that focuses a few more vocabulary words, but you WILL NOT be quizzed on these words. You can go to UNIT SEVENTEEN B here.
Also, we will continue to look at classifiers.
And lastly, we will continue our study of scripture from the "Deaf Bible," an ASL interpretation of God's Word. This unit we will focus on John 14:6.
Due for this unit:
- Send me a video of yourself signing the vocabulary as soon as possible so I can check for proper production.
- I will post a vocabulary quiz video in about 3 weeks. You should type up your answers and email them to me at [email protected].
- Send me a video of yourself signing the scripture.
- Respond to the FB video prompt via the FB group.
