You will see that units in ASL III will follow the numbering established in ASL I and II, so rather than saying "UNIT ONE" in this class, it will continue with the numbering system set up in ASL I and II.
SO, that means our first unit of study for this class will be titled
UNIT TWENTY-ONE.
We will continue our study of scripture.
Assignments for this unit:
* View the embedded YouTube video below to see the vocabulary for this unit.
* When you have completed the assignments above and feel pretty good about what you have learned, you can click on the embedded YouTube video below (48:59) . It is a discussion between Dr. Bill and one of his students. It is very clear. Even if you don't understand something he is saying, focus on the text on the screen behind him, and it will make sense.
* Practice the sentences at the bottom of the page.
* We will continue our learning of Scripture, with the first semester devoted to the Sermon on the Mount (Mt 5:1-12). It is a very valuable lesson that Jesus teaches, so I though it would be a good piece to know! We will take it in chunks, so no worries.
Watch and learn the Scripture video below. You will send me a video of yourself signing this Scripture at the end of the unit (or before if you want). Here is a link to the Deaf Bible, but the video of only Matthew 5:1-2 is embedded below.
* Send me a video of yourself signing the vocabulary words so I can check your production of the signs. Please use one of the following:

Classifier: V (review)
There is a sign known as "Classifier V." This is sometimes written as: "CL:V"
The V handshape can be used to mean: walk-to, jump, fall, fall-down, dance, dive-in, get-up, laid-up/dead-animal, lie-down, anxious, sit in a certain way, stand in a certain way, roll-around, look-at something in a certain way, and many other concepts. (See the video posted below for review.)

Role Taking:
In ASL instead of signing "he said" and then "she said" we can turn our body slightly to the left for the comments of one character and then turn our body slightly to the right for the comments of the other character. We "role play" each character.
______________________________
Gender:
Gender is an important aspect of some languages but it isn't very prominent in ASL signs. For example, the concepts "he" and "she" are generally signed by pointing an index finger off to the side. Thus the ASL pronouns "HE" and "SHE" are signed exactly the same. The gender is established prior to the use of the pronoun, but after that the pronoun HE is indistinguishable from the pronoun SHE.

Matthew 5:1-2
5 Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, 2 and he began to teach them.
As usual, the video will be glossed into ASL. Pay special attention to the classifiers used, especially his use of CL:V, which we are reviewing this unit.
